Double resignation shock for Sheringham Town Council

Sheringham has been rocked by a double resignation from the town council.

Town mayor Doug Smith confirmed this morning that Stephen Booth and Richard Hewitt had both stood down from the council in the last few days.

Their resignation letters did not say why they had decided to leave the council, but it is believed the decisions could be linked to the recent handover of £60,000 of Tesco cash for sports facilities in the town.

At a meeting on March 12, Mr Booth and Mr Hewitt were vociferous supporters of the council handing the money to Sheringham High School to finance floodlights for its synthetic sports pitch.

But the decision was made to give the money to Sheringham Sports Association, to cover much of the cost of providing a multi-use games surface at the recreation ground on Weybourne Road.

The money became available in lieu of a previous promise by Tesco to provide sports facilities at the community centre that it has built on Holway Road - replacing the centre that will be demolished to make way for a Cromer Road supermarket.
