A decision over a shake-up in the way traffic uses Norwich city centre has been put on hold, to the delight of campaigners who had concerns about part of the proposals.
Council transport bosses have come up with a scheme they say will ease congestion in the centre of Norwich, which includes making Chapel Field North two-way and preventing general traffic from using St Stephens Street and part of Surrey Street.
A decision was due to be made today by members of the Norwich Highways Agency Committee, made up of city and county councillors.
But, after protesters presented a petition signed by 1,501 people and addressed the committee with their concerns, councillors decided to defer a decision.
Campaigners, many of whom live in Chapel Field North and Little Bethel Street, said they felt there had not been proper public consultation, figures used to justify the scheme were inaccurate and alternative plans they had put forward had not been properly considered.
The committee agreed that there should be more talks between officers and the protesters, particularly about the figures the campaigners claimed were wrong and about the alternative plans they put forward.

The report concentrates on the effect on traffic flow in the Chapelfield area. We at Disabled Motoring UK objected because of the proposed loss on Blue Badge parking spaces on Surrey Street and St Stephens.

Having been at the meeting it was a very welcome example of local democracy working ..obviously we will wait and see...but thanks to the group of councillors for listening .. Only small concern was the main Transport lady on the committee .She defended the changes at every turn ,fair enough ,but she seemed to lack any empathy or engagement and her attitude seemed to be one of sheer annoyance that anyone should question her opinion ..!...and gosh did she have an opinion.
