A decision on whether to knock down the old Shannocks hotel in Sheringham has been deferred.

North Norfolk District Council's development committee met on Thursday, September 28 to vote on plans to redevelop the 'eyesore' in the middle of the town centre.

A council spokesman said it was 'deferred to a later date'.

NNDC had submitted plans to demolish the old hotel, and then build four commercial units and 10 apartments on the site.

The plan also included taking over the land currently occupied by the Chequers public car park.

Both Sheringham Town Council and Historic England, as well as residents and business owners, raised issues with the plan, ahead of the meeting, objecting to the loss of an historic building and car parking.

However NNDC stated that the development would contribute 'both to the commercial viability of the town centre and the mix of residential dwellings'.
