A council cost-cutting measure looks set to receive a stamp of approval.

Great Yarmouth Borough Council is proposing to send all its mail by second class instead of first class postage, saving an estimated £60,000 over four years.

The move is one of several cost-cutting measures being proposed including closing Market Gates toilets, bringing council house valuations in house, and deleting a vacant post.

A spokesman said not everyone carried out their business online and there was plenty of paper work that needed to be sent out including council tax bills which had to go to every home in the borough, election material and certain reminders and warnings.

Councillor Chris Walch who is opposed to the toilets closure supported the change saying it should have been put in years ago.

It comes as households face a council tax hike of £5 on a Band D property. This represents a 3.3pc increase.

Most households are in the lowest bands so would pay less than £4 extra over the course of the year for services provided by the borough council. The report was considered by councillors at the Policy and Resources committee on Tuesday.

Full council will make the final decision on February 20.
