Councillors have expressed concerns over speed limits on a dangerous stretch of road near Spixworth which claimed two lives in less than three weeks.

Spixworth Parish Council also wants warning signs to be erected on the B1150 North Walsham Road, alerting drivers to the number of accidents and to encourage them to drive responsibly. Matt Meacham-Roberts, a 19-year-old restaurant worker, died in a crash on June 20, between the junction for Crostwick Lane, Spixworth, and Norwich Rugby Club. Just over two weeks previously, a cyclist in his 40s was killed on the same road at Beeston St Andrew. Councillors have agreed to write to Norfolk County Council’s highways department to request a lowering of the speed limit on the road to 50mph between Sprowston and Spixworth. Chairman Ian Fitt said: “The two fatalities happened on the stretch which is at 60mph, and is between two 50mph zones.

“We feel that it would help – not solve – the situation if we could make it a consistent speed limit.”

The 60mph stretch includes a turn-off for a farm shop, which means vehicles entering or leaving are often travelling at lower speed or looking for a gap in oncoming traffic.

Signs warning drivers to the number of previous accidents on the road would ensure that those who did not know the road well would be aware, added Mr Fitt.

Traffic on the road has increased in recent years and it is expected to get busier still when the NDR is completed.

Mr Fitt added: “We have also looked at maintaining a sign in the area of the accidents to draw attention to motorists that they are entering that section of the road and to be aware of their speed.”
