Conservative Tim Passmore has become Suffolk’s first police and crime commissioner.

Labour’s Jane Basham had held a narrow lead in the race after round one, but after the second choices of those who voted for David Cocks, an independent, and Bill Mountford, UKIP, were counted, Mr Passmore won.

After the total votes were counted Mr Passmore beat Ms Basham by 1,941 votes, with more than 3,000 ballot papers spoilt and only 16pc of the electorate voting.

The first round votes were:

Jane Basham(Lab) - 29,967

David Cocks(Ind) - 14,217

Bill Mountford (UKIP) - 11,179

Tim Passmore (Con)- 29,805.

The number spoilt were 3,330.

Through the second preference round Ms Basham received 5,038 votes, making a total of 35,005, while Mr Passmore received 7,141, making a total of 36,946.

Mr Passmore said: “I am honoured and privileged to win the election and humbled by the result. Together we can make Suffolk a safer and better county.”

The turnout figure in Suffolk has been confirmed as 16.01pc. In the Waveney district, which includes Beccles, Bungay and Lowestoft, there was a 15.89pc turnout. In Norfolk the turnout was 15pc.

  • Unfortunately it's not just a question of "bothering to take part in the election". I deeply disagree with all of this, and the candidates are a pretty dire bunch anyway. The voting slips don't allow a "None of these" option, nor are spoilt papers analysed as anything but that, so that writing "None of these" or such on them doesn't appear as a protest but just a spoilt paper. In other words, I wasn't allowed to "bother", given the limited opportunities to do so. That's why a lot of people stayed away from this politicised charade.
