Defeated Conservative county council group chairman nominee Graham Plant insisted today: “Bill is a good bloke. We have no angst.”

Restaurant owner Mr Plant today lost the two-candidate contest to Bill Borrett, who is now in line to be approved as Norfolk County Council leader on Monday.

Mr Plant, who represents Breydon, said: “Bill has got the nod and it’s good for the Conservatives of Norfolk. My entire premise of going for the leadership election was to have a leader selected by the group going into the elections in May.

“I didn’t go into to it as a competition with myself and Bill. We’ve got a group behind the leader fully and to me that’s where we needed to be.

“Bill is a good bloke. We have no angst. We are where we are. We had no angst during the course of the pre-election or during the vote, nothing at all.

“We draw a line in the sand, we move forward and we present ourselves as a Conservative Party for Norfolk running up to the elections. I am sure our achievements and plans for the future will be enough to ensure we are hopefully selected again in May.”

The ballot at County Hall started at 10am and was held in secret.

Mr Plant has been a county councillor since 2009. He is cabinet member for planning and transportation and is also a Great Yarmouth borough councillor.

He owns the Italian Restaurant in King Street, Yarmouth, and the Tan Lane fish and chip shop in Caister.

Today’s election took place after former Norfolk County Council leader Derrick Murphy resigned. He did so last month, to focus on a standards hearing he was facing.

At that hearing he was cleared, by a committee of fellow councillors, of six of seven claims he had breached the council’s code of conduct, but on one count he was found to have committed a breach.

  • Would anyone like to see the actual dictionary definition of Angst? "It is often confused with anxiety, (especially by County Councillors), it is a transcendent emotion in that it combines the unbearable anguish of life with the hopes of overcoming this seemingly impossible situation. Angst denotes the constant struggle one has with the burdens of life that weighs on the dispossessed and not knowing when salvation will appear." I think that puts it rather well don't you Mr Plant? Or did you mean anxiety? I don't think that titch Borratt is going to be very happy with you describing his being leader as a "seemingly impossible situation" no matter what us human beings are thinking.

  • Graham Plant is not qualified? And Borratt is Lucasian Professor of Mathematics eh? I see Plant has assumed former position. "Bill is a good bloke, please can I keep my job in Cabinet? I am as qualified as you need to be to have a job in Norfolk's cabinet, ie a certificate in Needlework"

  • So the open and transparent NCC held a ballot in secret, doesn’t that just about sum up everything that’s wrong at County Hall?

  • Let's hope Bill Borrett is leader for the shortest time on record as he has no connection whatsoever, with people other than of his own 'click'.

  • This is great news, Graham Plant is not qualified and had no place holding such a senior position on the council.
