The go-ahead has been granted for part of the Assembly House, one of the most historic buildings in Norwich, to be turned into five-star bed and breakfast accommodation.

The trustees of the Theatre Street building have secured permission from Norwich City Council and English Heritage to convert and extend part of the east wing and the neighbouring St Mary’s House.

It means the trustees can now turn what they described as under-used staff rooms into 11 rooms for use as the bed and breakfast accommodation.

Philip Norton, chairman of the Assembly House Trust, said: “We are delighted to gain approval for this development. The accommodation will be of a very high standard which we believe will be a bonus for visitors to Norwich.”

A contractor for the project is due to be will be announced in the coming weeks and building work will then be starting soon afterwards.

The Assembly House Trust is a charitable organisation and trustees said the revenue generated from the new accommodation wing will help support the performing and visual arts in Norwich, as well as maintaining and enhancing the Assembly House itself.

The Grade 1 listed building has a rich history, having started life as a medieval hospital.

For more than 250 years it has provided a home for a number of varied activities and for many charitable organisations to hold their meetings.

The decision by Norwich City Council to grant permission was made by officers, and did not come before members of the authority’s planning committee.

Council officers have said an historic record of the building, complete with photographs, must be submitted and approved, before any buildings can be knocked down.
