Two horses have died after escaping from their field and walking on to the A14 in the early hours of this morning.
Suffolk Police received reports of five animals walking down the slip road at junction 53 at Whitehouse, Ipswich, on to the east bound carriageway at about 1.18am.
The horses were thought to be walking into the path of the oncoming traffic, according to reports from motorists.
A police spokesman said two of the horses had been hit and died at the scene.
The other three animals were secured and are now back in the care of their owners.
“Unfortunately the driver of the vehicle did not stop, so we are appealing for them to get in contact today,” he said. “If they were driving a HGV they may not be aware they hit the animals.”
The A14 was closed while officers dealt with the incident. It reopened at 4am.
