Five people were arrested as police raided houses, stopped people in the street and checked vehicles across Norwich today.

Officers carried out raids on nine properties, with searches in Beverley Road, Carlton Gardens and Brewers Court proving unsuccessful.

But a 43-year-old was arrested on suspicion of cannabis cultivation, and later cautioned, after a small amount of cannabis was found at an address in Magdalen Close. A tent and cultivating equipment discovered in the bedroom were also seized by police for destruction.

A 28-year-old was cautioned for possessing herbal cannabis during a search at a Pilling Park Road house, while a 38-year-old man was arrested at an address in Aylsham Road on suspicion of stealing a bike from Haymarket in September.

Detectives from Norwich CID raided homes in Palmer Close and Heathgate where cannabis was seized and two people reported for possession offences.

A 30-year-old man stopped and searched in Bishopgate was arrested and questioned after being found in possession of heroin. Elsewhere, a 39-year-old man wanted on suspicion of attempted theft was arrested in Cotman Fields, while an 18-year-old woman was held in connection with criminal damage following an incident at the YMCA in Bethel Street.

Roadside checks also took place in Mile Cross Lane and Jupiter Road. Police stopped 38 vehicles and 11 drivers were given verbal warnings for various offences and three were issued with fixed penalty notices. One vehicle was seized.

Officers from the Norwich East policing team carried out a bike marking event in Millennium Plain, outside The Forum, this afternoon.

More than 20 cycles were marked, while 30 people received details of how to register their bikes on a national database.

Norfolk police said the day’s events were connected to Operation Octane, which aims to target criminals in the run-up to Christmas.
