Police have revealed that horses which escaped onto a busy Norwich road were able to do so because a wire fence was cut to let them out.

As reported, on Saturday, drivers spotted a horse wandering along Sweet Briar Road, sparking a rash of calls to police.

But Norfolk police have said they have now discovered that the reason the horse, and others, got out was because the fence around a field was cut - and it happened again the following day.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the crimes. The first happened between midday and 2.30pm on Saturday when four horses escaped from a field between Marriott’s Way and Sweet Briar Road after the wire fence was cut.

The horses were quickly returned to the field by the owner and the damaged fence was located and repaired.

But the next day, shortly before 11am the fence was cut again and the horses once again escaped.

Police received several calls from drivers concerning horses on the road and officers attended and blocked the road while the horses were returned to the field.

Officers have appealed for witnesses and would like to hear from anyone who may have been driving in the area and noticed anything suspicious.

Witnesses should contact PCSO Victoria McDowell at Hurricane Way Police Station on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
