Great Yarmouth’s only secondary school has been told it needs to make improvements – despite action being taken to address concerns.

Ofsted inspectors said Great Yarmouth High School is “not good” because students do not make good progress, particularly in maths, the quality of teaching is not consistently up to scratch and governors do not challenge school leaders.

And while they also cited concerns over marking of work and students’ attitudes, inspectors noted the improvements made since their last visit – which headteacher Wendy Missons welcomed.

The school, which is in negotiation about becoming an academy, has remained in the requires improvement category following an inspection.

Inspectors, who visited the school at the beginning of June, said in their latest report that the proportion of students getting five GCSE passes at grades A* to C, including English and maths, was “well below” the national average. And in several subjects the proportions of A* and A grades were “significantly below” average in 2013.

But they highlighted the gains the school had made in particular Ms Missons’ strong leadership, improvements in students’ achievement in English and senior leaders work to tackle weaker areas.

The report said students also achieved well in science and modern foreign languages, and data showed results in art, geography and ICT are set to improve this year.

Ms Missons said: “We were actually rather pleased with the report; though we have remained a ‘requires improvement’ school the inspection team recognised real improvements in the school and most of their comments were positive.

“The key issues were spot on and we have already completed our action plan and are working on those.”

Inspectors felt the school was going in the “right direction”, she added and she promised to keep working to make it the “very best” for Yarmouth youngsters.
