Stakeholders have pledged to try and save Eaton Post Office from closure, after its postmaster said he wanted to leave.
Norwich South MP Simon Wright met representatives from Post Office Ltd yesterday, and said afterwards they were now looking for a business in the area to take on the Post Office services.
Mr Wright said: 'The post office has been in Eaton for more than a century, and for nearly half of that time it has been run by Malcolm Fuller - with his father having run it for 20 years before him.
'It's really important that Eaton continues to have a post office service.
'I got a commitment at the meeting from the Post Office that they don't want to see any branch closures, and will work with me and others, to explore the options.
'I would strongly appeal for any businesses in Eaton that want to host Post Office services to contact me.'
A spokesman for Post Office Ltd said there were no plans for Eaton Post Office to close.
A spokesman said: 'We are committed to maintaining the size of our network.
'We explained at the meeting that the postmaster at Eaton Post Office would like to leave under our major network modernisation programme if we can find a suitable business to take on the Post Office.
'While the community is keen for the branch to move to Waitrose, that company has written to Post Office Ltd and to the MP to express that it does not want to take on Eaton Post Office.
'The vacancy has been advertised in the past and will be readvertised again.'
As reported, Mr Fuller, 59, said that mounting costs and dwindling wages were forcing him to rethink the branch's future - and that it could be closed in the new year if a solution was not found.
He said: 'I can't keep supporting this out of my own savings – I don't want to leave the village without the service but I don't feel like I've got a choice. There are people who rely on this but my problem is my overheads.'
Mr Fuller employs one full-time member of staff and two part-time.
