Dog walkers and other users of a common called for Beccles Town Council to reconsider its plan to gas rabbits last night, and this morning the council confirmed they would postpone the move as they “consider all of the views received”.

The council adjourned its meeting last night to hear from a group who spoke of their unease at the move to authorise a company to gas rabbits in three areas of Beccles Common, from November 20.

All feared the impact the gas pellets could have on dogs and questioned whether it was the best method to use.

The questions prompted councillor Christopher Scott to suggest ferreting might be an alternate option, while fellow councillor Jack Walmsley said further information might be necessary and that it might need to be put back on the council agenda.

Mayor Graham Catchpole said that they had queried the impact of the gas pellets and deputy mayor Caroline Topping said that Suffolk Wildlife Trust had suggested this as the best way of dealing with the problem.

However, Mr Catchpole did say they would put the concerns to the company involved.

  • Give it time and the badgers will move in, say yum, and dig out the baby rabbits. Or if lucky as in our part of the world, buzzards will discover the common and the table laid out for them. The rise in the number of buzzards is helping to solve the rabbit problem.

  • What a joke. Vermin before people. What ever next. It's high time that people who lived in the countryside made an attempt to understand it. Man has destroyed the balance of nature many years ago but we're not going to re introduce the top predators (wolves) again so we have to control the wildlife as it is. It's not always nice but it's life...and death. Get over it or move to the cities and never see anything other than feral pigeons.
