Lowestoft is to get a lap dancing and pole dancing club, councillors agreed tonight - despite fears it will create a “no go zone” for women.

Waveney District Council’s licensing committee voted in favour to allow the Candy Lounge Gentleman’s Club to be set up in Station Square on the site of the former Vibe nightclub by the Bascule bridge

The application by Hazel Wilson and Stephen Barrett to set up the sexual entertainment venue (SEV) had provoked a flurry of objections from residents who were concerned it would lower the tone of the area and create a public nuisance.

Speaking at tonight’s meeting was objector Tracy Gunn, who said: “It is potentially harmful to the image and prosperity of the town.

“I suggest SEVs create a no go zone for women.”

John Payne, speaking on behalf of other objectors, said the club was “wholly unacceptable” due its proximity to the town’s main shopping area.

The meeting heard the club’s windows would be blanked out and there would be no signs promoting it on display when it was not open.

And it was said by the club’s backers that the venue would draw more money into Lowestoft’s economy.

Mr Barrett, who was assistant manager at a lap dance club in Cambridge for five years, said: “Our business format is to remain discrete and blend in.

“We believe our business will bring in fresh revenue from out of the town as well as Lowestoft itself.”

The terms of the Candy Lounge Gentleman’s Club license will last a year and it will only be open between 9pm and 3am on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and St George’s Day and St Patrick’s Day.
