Pieces of Norfolk's military history are set to go under the hammer at the weekend, including old Norfolk Yeomanry regiment uniforms.

Officials from the auction rooms in Diss said the homecoming parade of soldiers from the 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment through the town last month had sparked a renewed interest in military memorabilia.

Hundreds of lots, including uniforms, medals, helmets, and weapons will be sold at a special militaria sale at TW Gaze in Diss on Saturday.

The auction will include six Norfolk Yeomanry uniforms, which date from the reigns of King Edward VII and George V, which are being sold by a private collector from the area. The uniforms are estimated to go under the hammer for between 100 to 500 each.

A collection of 200 bayonets spanning more than 200 years and the military collection of Colin Sadd, of Easton, near Norwich, who died earlier this year, will also be sold.

The passionate collector, who spent 25 years in the TA, accumulated bayonets dating from the Napoleonic Wars to the Falklands conflict, which will be auctioned off from 10am on Saturday.

Edward Taxil-Webber, auctioneer and valuer for TW Gaze, said military sales were growing in popularity since their first specialist sale last year.

'Interest has grown and grown and people are beginning to realise their private collections are worth something. I think people seeing the Royal Anglian Regiment coming through Diss has sparked an interest and made people look at what they have at home.' 'There are a lot of lots with Norfolk connections and there is going to be a lot of local interest,' he said.

The militaria sale also includes an extensive collection of 7th Armoured Division Desert Rats-related items that were owned by Ken Gibbons, of the 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery, which supported the division during the Western Desert campaign in Italy in 1943 and the Normandy landings.

The lot, estimated to sell for up to 1,200 includes a uniform, medals and artefacts collected during the second world war including a Nazi belt buckle and SS booklet.

The Norfolk Yeomanry uniforms date from 1901 when the regiment was formed by King Edward VII.

A cast bronze bust of Adolf Hitler, valued between 800 to 1,200, is also set to go under the hammer on Saturday.
