Firefighters today rescued a man from a fishing boat after his foot became trapped in its hold.

Crews were callled to the Buoy Yard, behind the Corn Exchange in Ferry Street, just before 11am. A man working on the 35ft vessel had become trapped under a propellor.

As the drama unfolded, station manager Tim Edwards said: 'We've got a male casualty who's trapped by the propellor. He's in the hold of the boat and somehow he's got himself wedged.

'There's no significant injury but we've got to try and work inside the hold and free his leg, so we can assess his injuries and get him off. It's quite a tight place and the boat's on a list.'

The man was freed just after 11.30am. He was able to walk on deck, where paramedics checked over his injuries before he was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment to a leg injury.
