More than 40 people donned their trainers today (Sunday) as part of a project to raise 100,000 to create a games area in a north Norfolk village.

The Erpingham and Calthorpe Youth group organised their first 5km Rural Run in aid of the proposed multi use games area (MUGA) planned for at the village hall in Epringham.

The area would be sited on the village hall's playing field and would help to provide active fun for the villagers and surrounding areas.

Secretary Ros Fretwell hoped that the event would became an annual activity for the whole village to enjoy.

She said: 'We want to keep fundraising for this project as eventually we would like the MUGA to become a community thing.

'We hope the Olympics have inspired people to get involved with activities such as this one and to help support projects promoting keeping active. This is a fun way of raising money and keeping fit.'

Chairman Peter Wilcox added: 'We are keen to get more local support to help with fund-raising events as well as getting more help in applying for funding for this project.'

The group hope to raise enough funds to buy an all-weather surface for football, tennis and basketball. They also want to introduce an area for things such as archery.

Mrs Fretwell added: 'The possibilities are endless.'

Medals were given out to the winners who went around the 3.1m route the fastest in the categories of adult male, adult female, under 16s, under 14s and under 10s.

Refreshments were provided on the day by a group of Erpingham Primary School parents.
