A traditional Wassail celebration was held at a Norwich pub last night to celebrate its status as East Anglia Cider Pub of the Year for 2012.

The White Lion, in Oak Street, was given the award by the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) as it regularly has more than 15 real ciders and perries available from Norfolk, East Anglia and beyond.

Ben Ackers and Becky Lakeman-Turner, who run the pub, decided to celebrate their success with the Wassail event – a celebration which dates back to Anglo Saxon times.

Golden Star Morris, a mixed Cotswold-style morris dance side from Norwich, helped to provide the entertainment.

The health of a young apple tree was toasted, which will now be donated to one of The White Lion’s cider producers for planting to eventually make cider for the pub.
