Hundreds of supporters braved the showery conditions to watch the race this afternoon, which started just after midday from the Lady Julian Bridge, in Riverside.

The duck race has been an annual fixture during the Lord Mayor’s Celebration weekend since 2010 and is organised by the 1st Norwich Sea Scout Group.

Since its inception, the duck race has raised more than £38,000 for the scouting movement in the city and this year’s event will generate more than £9,000.

Jane Stafford, one of the leaders of the 1st Norwich Sea Scouts, said a donation would also be made to the Lord Mayor’s civic charity, Cruse Bereavement Care, and the Sistema in Norwich band, which played during the event.

“When we started it was because we needed a new headquarters, but 18 months ago we opened an all singing and dancing headquarters. Now the fund we get for this maintain our headquarters,” she said.

The duck race, which involved 4,100 colourful plastic ducks, was started by the Lord Mayor Judith Lubbock and Sheriff of Norwich William Armstrong.
