Dressed in gowns and mortar boards the jubilant pupils from University Campus Suffolk (UCS) in Lowestoft crowded into St Margaret’s Church today (Saturday), surrounded by more than 400 smiling guests.

Students waited expectantly for their name to be called out while the lively crowd clapped, cheered, took pictures and stamped their feet as each went up to collect their scroll.

Opening the ceremony UCS provost and chief executive Mike Saks praised students and said they should all be “very proud” with their efforts.

He said: “Your achievements in obtaining your qualifications are very great. I would like to thank on your behalf the lecturers, family and friends who have supported you during your studies.

“I’m sure your hard earned qualifications will stand you in very good stead. I hope you will remember your time at UCS Lowestoft with great affection and wish you every success in work and in life for the future.”

After all 102 graduates, who ranged in age from early 20s up, had collected their degrees, master of ceremonies Charles Reynolds announced the UCS Lowestoft student of the year award.

The accolade was handed to Carolyn Ellis, who successfully gained a first class BA with honours in inclusive practice and integrated working. The mum of three was praised for juggling her part time studies with her job and family and for her “ground breaking” dissertation, which had received praise across the board.
