Hundreds lined Sheringham High Street, to watch wacky contraptions ranging from a wheeled lobster pot to a steam train take part in carnival street races.

Nineteen carts, from family groups to workmates, raced up and down the hay bale-lined street, with a group of hotel and pub workers joining in the fun by competing in a waiters and waitresses race.

Onlookers pelted contestants with water bombs, eggs and flour-filled paper bags, with youngsters bringing along “super soaker” water pistols to fire at the carts.

Children’s race winners were 13-year-old pals Theo Hafford and George Osborne, who sprinted to the finish line in their cart, which was modelled on cartoon character Scooby Doo’s Mystery Machine.

Adult race winners were Tom Jackson and Emily Dykes in their “caveman” cart, while taking the parent and child and best decorated titles was Kevin Pitcher and his daughters Roseanna, 3, and Ruby Jean, 5, who competed in their giant lobster pot, the Shellfish Shuttle.

Best overall prize-winner was Julian Harmer, who impressed judges with his steam train cart, with Lauren Minchen, who works at Roy Boys café, winning the waiter and waitresses race for the third year running.

Carnival chairman Stuart McClean said the races were one of the highlights of the carnival programme.

“This year has been fantastic, one of the best yet,” he added. “The amount of support we have has been absolutely overwhelming and I think the fact that the races have been so well organised has contributed to the event’s success.”
