Weird and wonderful scarecrows were dotted along the streets of a Norwich suburb this weekend as the annual competition to find the best creation was in full swing.

Eaton village residents’ association had all types of straw strangers outside the 33 houses in the competition. The association teamed up with Waitorse over the two-day trail to provide a route for visitors to follow, as well as a voting form to judge the best.

Teaching assistant Julie Parker 54, from Denmead Close, said her family’s Alice in Wonderland-themed scarecrow display was a good opportunity for the family to spend time together.

She said: “Having the trail around Eaton has been brilliant for us as a family, but also because we have met people who live here that we have never met before. It feels like village life in the city.”

Mum-of-two Heidi Higham, who lives in Eaton Street, said her children Tegan, 10, and Tobias, five, made their scarecrow called Tatty by themselves.

She said: “They put together most of it from clothes from my wardrobe and covered the crown in glitter. It’s lovely for them to meet people in the community.”

Chris Stebbing, vice chairman of the association, said the increase in entries to was very pleasing and thanked Waitrose for their support.

Lucy Webster, from Waitrose, added that “imagination” and “creativity” make the perfect scarecrow.

The winners of the competition will be announced next week.
