Scores of people lined the pier to watch the volunteers in action, as they launched both the inshore Seahorse IV vessel and the all-weather Samarbeta.

Set against yesterday’s sunny evening skies the RNLI crew rescued casualties from the water, put out a fire on board a boat, righted an overturned sailing yacht and showed off the capabilities of both boats. They were joined for the dazzling display by the team from RAF Rescue 125 in their Sea King helicopter – which used its winch to rescue one of casualties from the water – the crew from Lowestoft’s Lifeboat and Gorleston’s RNLI beach lifeguards.

Spectators clapped, cheered and waved after each rescue and had cameras and phones at the ready to take plenty of pictures of the action.

Paddy Lee, coxswain, said “We used to do it years ago. I was made coxswain last year and it was something I wanted to bring back as it’s a bit of a tradition.”

“We ran it last year and it was quite successful and it seems to have just grown.”

The event aimed to showcase the skills of all the RNLI teams while promoting sea safety.

Mr Lee added: “All the crew are buzzing. They really like to show the public what we train for. It’s for the holidaymakers and the locals for all their valued support throughout the year.”

The crowd of families, friends and youngsters lined the prom to watch the action unfold and showed their appreciation throughout, before being treated to a “sail past” at the end of the display, complete with horns from the vessels involved.

Entertainment continued at the Cliff Hotel afterwards, with live music and fundraising in aid of the RNLI.

Albert Cadmore, chairman of Gorleston and Great Yarmouth Lifeboat, said: “It’s a night when the whole lifeboat family are out in force. It’s lovely to be out on an evening with our lifeguards as well.

“Hopefully it’s given a lot of pleasure to the gathered crowd.”
