There was plenty of yo-ho-ho but a bit less bottle of rum when a gang of pirates landed on the West Norfolk coast.

But boat-owners and businesses need not have feared as the pirates came in peace and were settling down to some serious fundraising for the Norfolk Hospice charity.

Former Norwich City star Chris Sutton got the ball rolling when he officially started the 4.5 mile walk from Heacham to Hunstanton yesterday (Friday) evening.

Organiser Amanda Standen said the walk had been really successful and she hoped when all the money was in that around £10,000 would be raised for the hospice.

“It went very well and we had lots of people take part. It was great that Chris Sutton was able to come along and he auctioned-off a premiership football which raised another £50,” she said.

Striped shirts, eye-patches and Jolly Rogers were everywhere as more than 100 people arrived to take part in the walk and raise cash for the hospice.

The walk followed on from the success of a pyjama walk held in King’s Lynn last year, but the event was held a month earlier to try and ensure reasonable weather. The move paid off as it was a glorious evening on the coast.

The fun continued after the walk as participants returned to Silver Sands for entertainment from Battle of the Bands winner and supporters of Festival Too, Jessie’s Ghost.

Supporters of the Hospice, at Tapping House, Snettisham, are planning the next event - a Santa Dash to be held at the Sandringham Visitor Centre on Saturday, December 10.

Work started earlier this year on creating a new £4m purpose-built hospice to provide 24-hour care at a new site in Hillington, near King’s Lynn.
