Norwich was awash with festive cheer this evening after the city’s Christmas lights were switched on.

Paralympic archer Mel Clarke, who won a silver medal in this year’s Paralympic Games, lit up the city centre when she pressed the switch at 7pm.

Around 5,000 people were entertained outside City Hall with music and fireworks spouting from the balcony of the council’s headquarters and from the roof of Jarrolds.

  • Mr T, with the turning off of streetlights throughout the county this year, savings have been made; which means that the County capital can now afford this extravagance! Thassa rummun innit?

  • Mr T, it's to whip everybody into a neurotic credit busting frenzy of spend, spend, spend as is the tradition at this time of year. Has the message been lost one ponders???

  • Rorping: No milk bottle tops, no tree, over commercialised rubbish and a waste of money, prefer to donate it to a sensible charity. As for all the tacky lights everywhere, cheap tat.

  • Mr T, I disagree. Those lights go on, we sing in song, with warmed mulled wine, it's Christmas time. Be it All Saints Green or City Hall, it's time to spread the love to all. My personal congratulations to all invovled. Regards, Whiley.

  • Strange you read in the papers every day we have an energy crisis and power shortage, not to mention lack of funds everywhere and suddenly we have money to burn! Why so early? What is wrong with on just before Christmas and off straight after? Or is that far to simple?
