The doors were opened by store manager Phil Whitling on Friday at 8am, while guests of honour, Mundesley Parish council chairman Christopher West and Amanda Ng, chairman of the Mundesley Youth and Community group cut the ribbon at the new store when it was officially opened at 10.30am.

The store sells a range of goods including groceries, fresh bakery products and newspapers. It also has a ‘click and collect’ point for goods ordered online and an ATM machine.

When the plans for the store were first announced traders had started a petition, with worries it would impact on existing businesses in the village but Tesco said it would not be competing with any of the local shops.

Mr Whiting said the feedback they had received from people over the past few weeks leading up to the opening had been positive.

He said: “The feedback we have had while we have been working here in the last few weeks is that people have been looking forward to the store opening.”

Speaking about the opening day he said: “We have had quite a few customers through the door and they have been really positive.”

Amanda Ng, chairman of the Mundesley Youth and Community group who help raise money to build facilities or children in the village said Tesco had given them a donation of £500 which was presented to them at the opening on Friday .

The group is a blend of young people, parents, police, councillors, residents and businesses which has been working with the parish council to develop new facilities and services for the community.

She said: “It is fantastic to have the donation, and lovely to have Tesco in Mundesley, we hope this will be the start of a long relationship.”

Eighteen full and part time jobs have been created at the store, selected from 110 applicants.

Opening hours will be seven days a week from 6am until 11pm.

  • Your subheading should be "The new Mundesley Tesco Express store..." not "...Extra store...". This can be seen in the photo, which has a correct caption.

  • so 18 local jobs, by local i was hoping they meant Mundesley, how many jobs were offered to the people of Mundesley, NOT north walsham or cromer. And what about sorting the parking out, only this foggy morning did we see drivers trying to exit, via the not very well signed exit and entrence drives, only to have their views of the road blocked by a transit van parked in what used to be the bus stop between the exit and entrance.

  • Photo gallery?! Three pictures of the same three people-absolutely riveting. Very insightful observations as well 'store has a range of goods' and 'quite a few people have been in'. Fantastic stuff.
