A 34 year-old MG Midget that has never even been registered is set to go under the hammer next month.
The car with just 162 miles on the clock is expected to fetch between £7,000 and £9,000 at the Anglia Car Auction’s (ACA) Classic Sale in King’s Lynn.
The mileage on the car, in ‘vermillion red’, now actually reads a mere 19 miles after a faulty speedometer was replaced.
Rob George from ACA, said: “After 11 months, the car was despatched to Holland Brothers in Sleaford, Lincolnshire in a horsebox of all things for its first annual service. The car had, at this point, covered just 143 delivery miles.
“Whilst at the main dealer, they discovered that the speedo would not read above 10mph. It was duly replaced and the speedometer now reads 19 miles giving a total mileage of 162.”
The owner brought the brand new MG Midget after hearing of the imminent demise of MG but never registered the vehicle as he intended to give the car to one of his children on passing their driving test.
However for unknown reasons the owner’s children decided not to take the classic car on.
The car remains unregistered but is complete with the original bill of sale, owner’s handbooks and service manuals.
Last month, A 27-year-old Volvo 340 with just 132 miles on the clock sold for £5,000 at auction.
The car, whose elderly owner gave up driving soon after buying it, was in showroom condition apart from one small scratch on it.
ACA, which handled the sale, said the vehicle was discovered in a garage where it had been kept since 1987, after its owner passed away.
Lyn George from ACA said: “All these sorts of cars are now coming out of the woodwork, only this morning we have taken on a 2001 Nissan Micra with only 59 miles on it.”
The MG Midget is will be auctioned auctions’ Classic Sale, Beveridge Way, King’s Lynn on Saturday June 14, with viewing from 2pm on Friday June 13.
