More than 3,000 people turned out today (Sunday) to enjoy the penultimate event of this year’s Sheringham carnival.

The raft-race saw 12 teams participant and last year’s winner John Rumsby cruised to victory with his brother-in-law Mark Sadler in their creation “Daisy the dragon”.

Mr Rumsby, 39, from Bodham, near Holt, used his skills as a furniture maker to create his vessel for the popular event which had been revived last year in a bid to include more hands-on family events in the programme.

He said: “It was great fun and the rowing wasn’t too bad.”

Mr Rumsby and Mr Sadler were presented with a trophy.

Other winners included The Open Door community project, who won wackiest raft with their Viking ship, and The Smurfs, who won the best dressed crew.

Chairman of Sheringham carnival committee, Stuart McClean, said he was delighted with the “fantastic turn out” after temperatures of around 27C saw thousands of residents and tourists line up along the promenade to watch the race take place.

Crowds were also entertained when a flour-bombing session between competitors took place after the race.

Mr McClean said: “This day has made up for the actual carnival week, which suffered because of the bad weather. It’s been absolutely wonderful and it’s been great to see the committee stick together.”

He also appealed for more volunteers to help with next year’s carnival.

The final event for Sheringham carnival 2012 will be a masquerade ball on August 24 at the Links Hotel.
