Visitors could scarcely believe their eyes as a host of fashionable new residents took over in Eaton this weekend for the annual scarecrow festival.

Organised by the Eaton Village Residents’ Association, 29 families, businesses and schools took up the challenge of making a ‘scarily fashionable’ scarecrow.

Visitors were invited to follow a special trail to admire the creations and vote for their favourite.

Chris Stebbing, vice-chairman of the Eaton Village Residents’ Association, was part of the judging panel for the main prizes.

He said: “It has been a great day and quite a difficult task to judge.

“This is the fifth year of the festival and it grows each year, people are very inventive and very original.There were lots of very clever scarecrows.”

At the end of the first day, the judges deliberated and picked three winners to receive prizes from event sponsors Waitrose.

A Lady GaGa-themed scarecrow on Amderley Drive took first place, while a Despicable Me Minion scarecrow on Chestnut Hill was second. Third prize went to
a zombie entry on Burnhill Close.

The winner of the ‘People’s Choice’ scarecrow will be announced tomorrow.

Mr Stebbing said: “A young lad made the winning scarecrow and he enters every year. We liked what he did, and also the fact that he made it by himself.”

This year’s theme of ‘scarily fashionable’ came about after the residents’ association felt it wanted to do something different.

Mr Stebbing said: “Each year we think about what has happened during the year, but we didn’t want to do the World Cup or the Commonwealth Games.

“People’s interpretations of the theme have been great, some made theirs from scratch, some people bought in bits and bobs. Everyone really put in a lot of effort.”
