Exactly a year ago today, about 80 firefighters were called to deal with a blaze at Markham Tower, in Bowers Avenue, Mile Cross.

The blaze began on the eighth floor of the 10-storey building. It left one flat badly damaged, at least 10 more with water damage, and forced everyone out of the building while electrical work was carried out.

But nobody was believed to have been injured.

The tenants are all now back in their homes, and Bruno Berretti is moving in to the flat where the fire started.

He said: “We understand that our flat was fire-damaged at the time, but it’s now been renovated and painted.”

John Fairweather, who lives in a flat on the fourth floor, said: “I understand that everything is all right now. I remember the fire well. We all got put into hotels for about four weeks afterwards, before we could move back.”

Markham Tower was built in 1966 and has 44 flats which are all occupied by city council tenants.
