A sunny atmosphere prevailed at Reedham’s annual fete despite the bursts of heavy rain that swept over the event.

Hundreds of people flocked to the village hall to enjoy an afternoon of family fun, which included birds of prey displays, fair grounds rides, a bouncy castle and a tasty barbecue.

Members of the Ordgar Anglo Saxon reenactment group from Norwich were among the highlights and delighted the crowds with their live battle action.

It was the second time the group had appeared at the fete and this year youngsters were invited onto the field to take part in a sword fight.

There was also several stalls and stands with many local groups getting involved in the fun, including Reedham Pre-School which is starting up in the village on September 2.

Other groups taking part included Reedham WI and Nomads Theatre Company, which is based in the village.

Chris Bradbury, chairman of the village hall, said despite the soggy weather the fete had been a great success, with the barbecue selling out and the bar doing a roaring trade.

“The first lot of rain came just before two o’clock. People took shelter and once the rain finished we were surprised how people just came out again and started walking around. That was good,” he added.

The fete is known for always enjoying warm weather and Sunday’s downpours were the first time the popular event had suffered from rain in 16 years.

Mr Bradbury added: “It was a very good day despite the rain. It didn’t put people off and everyone had an enjoyable day.”

Proceeds from the fete will be donated to Reedham Community Association, which manages the day to day running of the village hall.
