Fund-raisers tackling the first Hunstanton Beach Run battled strong winds and energy-sapping sand to complete the 10k course with smiles on their faces.

Today’s event (Sunday) raised money for both the Stroke Association and the Friends of the Stroke Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn and organisers hope it will be the first of many.

In total, 50 people took part with many more lining the promenade and blustery beach to cheer them on.

While the runners got to grips with the gruelling course, families were kept entertained by a fun day boasting activities, stalls, live music and a classic car show on The Green.

The run was officially started at the Oasis Sports and Leisure Centre at noon by King’s Lynn-born actress and comedienne Victoria Bush.

Miss Bush, best-known for her role as Tina O’Kane ITV’s Bad Girls, is one half of comedy double act Checkley Bush and is to appear in BBC One drama Waterloo Road later this month.

“It’s great being here again,” she said. “My parents still live in Blackborough End so I try to get back as often as I can.

“I’m going to playing the new school secretary, Sonia Donegan, in Waterloo Road.”

The runners set off towards Old Hunstanton before heading back towards Heacham and finally finishing in Hunstanton.

Paul Brandon, committee member with the friends, said runners had come from as far afield as Kent to take part.

“It’s been breezy, but at least it stayed dry and hopefully those taking part enjoyed it.

“We have a base now and it would be nice to build on today in the future. I would like to think the Hunstanton Beach Run will be part of the legacy of the Olympic year and it will be a regular event.”

The run formed part of the Let’s Get Active 2012 campaign, which showcases the range of sporting activities on offer in the borough while encouraging residents to get fit and healthy.
