Record crowds turned out for a touch of seasonal festivity in Brandon this evening (Sunday) as the annual Christmas lights switch-on got underway.
This year’s event incorporated a market, songs from the Brandon Carollers, rap artist Picasso, band Heathen, and a fireworks display.
The tree was donated by the nearby Elveden Estate, and Lord Iveagh joined town crier Mike Wabe on stage for the all-important countdown.
Lord Iveagh, who has switched on the lights for a number of years, said he always enjoyed the event.
“As a local businessman in the local community we’re more than delighted to support the town with its tree - hopefully it’s a good one.
“It’s always fantastic to be here. It’s a good atmosphere and to see the town coming out is great,” he said.
Organiser Richard Crowther said this year had been bigger and better than ever.
“Last year was the first year we did a Christmas fair and this year the momentum has just grown,” he said. Town clerk Christine Mason added: “We’re a diverse community and they’re all invited and it proves we’re not a long lost community - it’s nice when people get together.
“It’s been really positive.”
