History came to life for children at a primary school as they had a medieval theme day.

As part of their topic learning about castles, knights and dragons, teachers organised the day for pupils at South Wootton Infant School, King’s Lynn.

Children and teachers dressed up, dined at a traditional banquet in the school hall and took part in medieval games such as jousting.

Headteacher Jo Davenport said: “They all seemed to go out the gate in a very medieval way, the day gave them a real understanding of medieval times.

“They generally enjoyed everything but they seemed to particularly enjoy the hobby horses and the archery.”

Teacher Rebecca Burt arranged for the Black Knight Historical educational events team to come to the school where actors play the part of medieval characters such as kings, princesses and knights.

Mrs Burt, who dressed up as a medieval maid said: “Having people come over who the children don’t know dressed up made it more real for them. They learnt so many artefacts and enjoyed the re-enactments.

“Also as part of the topic, we took the children to Castle Rising which they really enjoyed too.”

The children had soup, bread and chicken drumsticks for lunch on the royal table.

They also performed dances at a knighting ceremony and took part in jousting.
