There have been, and remain, many prominent printing firms in our region, and this week I’m presenting a few photos of buildings and workplaces that might jog readers’ memories.

Firstly, I couldn’t resist re-using this lovely photo of Wyman & Sons’ printing works in Fakenham in the late 1930s. These ladies are working in the bindery department in the Wharefedale Works in Whitehorse Street (1).

Our next shot is a rooftop view from 1957 over Yarmouth, featuring the Yare Printing Co. Ltd. prominently in the foreground (2).

This atmospheric shot of Coleby Printing Works in Dereham is dated to winter 1958 – the car in the foreground has been identified as belonging to Malcolm Matthews, MD of F&G Smith Maltings in the town (3).

In 1960 the BBC filmed the old ECN print works at Prospect House (home of the EDP); here they are in the foundry, filming the casting of printing plates for the newspapers (4).

East Anglian Printers’ new printing works at Trowse was photographed in dated July 1967, featuring the bookbinding section (5) and the massive Heidelberg rotary press in operation (6).

The Jarrold & Sons press shown here in November 1975 was then the biggest of its kind in the British Isles (7). Richard Clay of Bungay celebrated their centenary in 1977 and the EDP went along to photograph the large web press, capable of printing 20,000 copies an hour (8).

The despatch department of William Clowes of Beccles is the subject of our next photo, taken in August 1982 (9).

We end with a photo of the sewing department of Page Bros of Mile Cross near Norwich, photographed in 1984 (10).
