Our archives theme for this week is pantos of the past – oh yes it is!

Panto clearly was, and remains, an important part of the school year, introducing many children to the theatre and to performing live in front of an audience.

Our selection begins at King’s Lynn where the Youth Panto for 1967 presents an immediate problem of identification – is it Dick Whittington or a London version of The Sound of Music? (1)

In December 1968 Gorleston Cliff Park school were busy rehearsing Dick Whittington (2).

Sleeping Beauty was the panto of choice in King’s Lynn in 1970 when our photographer dropped by at a rehearsal (3). Hemsby Women’s Institute chose Snow White for their Christmas panto, as this shot from 1970 makes clear (4).

A quartet of young ladies in period costume does not immediately provide a clue as to Stalham Secondary School’s choice of panto in 1971 – perhaps readers can help? (5).

Another mystery is this charming photo of Marham Primary School’s 1971 Christmas show – though the whole school appears to be involved (6).

Salhouse cubs are got up in a fine array of costumes, depicting ... Babe in the Wood? (7).

King’s Lynn’s Howard Infants School portray Sleeping Beauty at a crucial moment in the story in this delightful photo from 1972 (8). Puss in Boots was the Sparrow’s Nest Theatre’s choice in 1976 (9).

Hethersett Players opted for Babes in the Wood in 1993, providing us with this group shot of the cast (10).
