A self-employed dance teacher who almost missed out on competing in a prime-time ITV show’s competition when it rolled into Norwich has said her eventual victory must have been down to fate.

Lucy Cook is looking forward to the “trip of a lifetime” to Florida, thanks to her 20-minute on-stage performance in front of hundreds of people when the Supercomputer from Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway came to Castle Mall last Monday.

Millions of viewers watched her performance and saw her crowned the winner when the show was broadcast last night.

Recalling Monday’s competition, the 22-year-old from Eastgate, near Reepham, said: “When I got there I had to go to work at 11am, and I left my mum in the queue, and a nephew who was in the queue was not very well so I rushed back from work and luckily they recognised me and let me in. They just shoved me on.”

The rush meant she did not have a chance to see other people take part in the competition, which allows people to show off their talents and personality, and demonstrate how much they want the prize.

Ms Cook said she had been discussing the show with her sister weeks before, and they wondered if it would come to the city.

She added: “I just really, really went for it and tried to get the crowd involved.”

Ms Cook, who runs the Parallel Dance Studios in Holt and Reepham, plans to take her partner Ashley Henderson on next month’s six-day trip, which she said would have been impossible for her to afford herself.
