Twenty colourful floral arrangements lined the aisles of St Botolph’s Church in North Cove this the bank holiday weekend for the annual flower festival.

This year’s displays were created to the theme songs through the ages, with arrangers dreaming up displays including a Teddy Bear’s Picnic, Oranges and Lemons and a Candle in the Wind.

The displays were created by local residents, along with a display by Cossey Funeral Services and the Beccles Flower Club.

The festival, which ran from Saturday to today, attracted a steady stream of visitors who could also enjoy a display of art work by children at Barnby and North Cove Primary School, as well as stalls selling jewellery and books, a water or wine competition, raffle and homemade refreshments.

Donations made by visitors will help to cover the running and insurance costs at St Botolph’s and neighbouring St John the Baptist Church in Barnby.

Judy Thacker, treasurer of both churches, said: “We had a very wide collection of displays and a steady stream of people which is really nice to see.

“We held two collections this year. One to help us cover the expenses of running the churches, and another to help us pay for repairs needed to the church.”

Church goers noticed a large crack running along the base of the south wall last summer after a grass snake made its way through the crack and into the church. The netting on the tower windows has also rotted away allowing birds to nest inside and the rendering is flaking off around the east side window.

Mrs Thacker predicted they would need around £10,000 to carry out the repairs.

The festival also included a songs of praise service on Sunday evening.
