The narrow streets off Norwich city centre became alive with the hubbub of music, dancing and conversation for one of the highlights of the Lord Mayor's Celebration Sunday schedule.

There was barely room to move on St Benedict's Street this afternoon as thousands of visitors descended on the Norwich Lanes Summer Fayre.

Organiser spoke of their fears when the event, which aims to raise the profile of businesses, shops and pubs in the area, opened on a very wet Sunday morning.

However, the rain clouds moved away and thousands of people hit the Norwich Lanes on the final day of the Lord Mayor's Celebration weekend.

Lauren Gregory, landlady of the Birdcage pub, in Pottergate, who has been organising the summer fayre for the last four years, said: 'It has been amazing. We were really down this morning when it was raining, but people have come out regardless and it has surprised me. It has been really life affirming. Hopefully, it has been really successful and I can not thank all the volunteers enough.'

'Our aim is that more and more people get involved every year and we have found that more and more people have stuck with it. It aims to raise the profile of the area,' she said.

The majority of shops and businesses in the lanes opened their doors today and St Benedict's Street was closed off with the road being filled with more than 100 stalls selling ice cream, hog roasts, pizzas, and barbecue food.

Independent stall holders sold a range of wares including soaps, jewellery, antiques, fabrics, and plants.

There was also a host of different acoustic musical performances and belly dancing.

Ruski, the artist who runs St Margaret's Church of Art, in St Benedict's Street, said he was delighted with the amount of people coming to see the latest Art of Norwich exhibition, showcasing the work of local artists.

'It is fantastic. Last year we had 1,000 people through the door and we have had 500 through this morning and on a usual day we get 50,' he said.

The Lord Mayor's Celebration continued today with a funfair in Chapelfield gardens and a host of family entertainment and a picnic and play event at St George's Green.
