Photo Gallery: Society to perform famous comic opera at King’s Lynn Arts Centre

One of the famous comic operas of Victorian double act Gilbert and Sullivan will be performed in King's Lynn.

A production of one of the pairs earlier operas The Sorcerer will run for four shows at the King's Lynn Art's Centre.

The show is being put on by the West Norfolk Gilbert and Sullivan Society and it will be the first time the society has performed at the Art Centre for 14 years.

The opera is being updated by director Andrew Nicklin from its original setting in the Victorian era to the 1930s.

Mr Nicklin said: 'In all the time I have been involved with this society, which has been since 2000, this is the best that I have heard them sing, there are some excellent performances from leads and I would say to everyone trying to decide whether to go to come and enjoy The Sorcerer.

'I've seen people come to Gilbert and Sullivan shows and say they didn't think it would be their kind of thing but afterwards they really enjoy it.

'Getting people through the door is the hard part but once they come they find they enjoy it.'

While Gilbert and Sullivan have remained popular and many of their comic operas continue to be performed regularly they do not seem to have chimed with a younger modern audience.

Mr Nicklin said: 'Unfortunately I don't think the schools choose to do these kinds of productions which is a real shame.

'There are some young people involved in West Norfolk which is great.'

To help promote the show members of the society visited Sennowe Park for a photoshoot.

The house, the Edwardian home of Thomas Albert Cook, was built in 1907 making it of a similar vintage to the period the society's production is set.

The production will be performed from Thursday, January 30, until Saturday, February 1.

Shows will start at 7.30pm on the Thursday and Friday and at 2.30pm and 7.30pm on the Saturday.
