It was records all round at Hunstanton today, as more than 150 took to the waters of The Wash for the resort’s annual Christmas swim.
Thousands turned out to watch the spectacle and cheer on the hardy souls who braved the waves in fancy dress for the event, organised by the town’s Round Table.
“It was our best Christmas ever by 50 swimmers, we had 170 swimmers and at least 3,000 attended,” shivered Round Table chairman Kevin Waddison.
“It’s a record for us on all counts and we hope to raise in the region of £5,000 which will all go to charities, groups and individuals around our area.”
Mr Waddison admitted he’d been warmer afterwards.
“It was cold as always,” he said. “we went about 100m into the water, everyone has to swim under the banner. No banner, no certificate.”
While swimmers are rumoured to enjoy a tot of Nelson’s favourite tipple to revive their spirits, Mr Waddison said soup, not rum, was on offer back at the changing rooms.
But to add insult to cold, bumper numbers attending meant the hot drinks had run out by the time he arrived.
As well as taking a dip, round tablers run a bucket collection among the crowds who line the seafront.
Last year’s proceeds were shared by West Norfolk Young Carers (£2,000), Dersingham Minors Football Club (£500) and Heacham Youth Club (£300), along with a number of other groups and individuals.
