Hundreds of people have braved the rain and cold weather to enjoy the Oulton Broad Gala Day - the biggest event in the Lowestoft area’s calendar.

Due to forecasts the organisers of today’s Oulton Broad Gala Day at Nicholas Everitt Park slashed admittance price for adults by 50pc in an effort to drum up a big crowds amid bad weather forecasts.

And sadly the Lowesoft Lions had to cancel the town’s only public fireworks display which was due to be held at 9pm.

While organisers said it the was event’s lowest attendance in the last 21 years, nearly one thousand people still enjoyed the day and its many activities and displays.

Among the colourful sights was the Steve Colley Motorcycle Stunt Show and John Evans, a strongman who can balance a Mini Cooper on his head. Other performers lined up in the main arena included Waggy Tails Dog Agility Display Team and a display by the Totally Wicked School of Dance.

A children’s area featured the K-Syl-R Disco, donkey rides and Professor Poulson’s Punch and Judy show, and there was live music from the Waveney Valley Brass Ensemble, Guitar George and the Oulton Broads harmony group, along with a number of other local acts.

At 3pm there was the popular annual Maidens in Distress Raft Race.

The gala day is due to run until 10.30pm with another performance from Guitar George, at 6pm there is due to be 60 minutes of young local musical talent arranged by Lucy Willis with the strongman performing again at 5pm.
