A north Suffolk village was invaded at the weekend by 60 colourful and bizarre scarecrow characters.

Mutford staged its 8th scarecrow festival on Saturday and Sunday, with scores of families on the hunt for the army of inventive creations set up by residents.

Among the wacky characters created were a gun-toting gorilla, Bart Simpson, a Transformers robot, a tramp stuck in a bin, Mr Incredible, Shrek, a knight fighting a dragon and a scary witch.

Other scarecrows included tennis player Rafael Nadal, Little Miss Muffet, a Smurf, the Karate Kid, a showjumper, the Tin Man and a scene from the film Up.

The scarecrow competition trail started at 10am on Saturday and by 2pm 50 forms had already been handed out.

The streets of Mutford were filled with families clutching their competition forms as they tried to find and describe all 60 scarecrows to win a hamper.

To help them, the scarecrow hunt forms had poems describing each scarecrow, such as “A Spanish star who is one of the best, to break his serve is his quest” and “A bullied boy is how he starts, until he’s learned the martial arts” and “He is the son of lady called Marge, his head is yellow and rather large”.

The two-day trail raised funds for Mutford village hall in Mill Road.

Organiser Roy Hurrell said it was set up as a way of getting residents of Mutford involved in their community.

Mr Hurrell, who made the Mr Incredible display at his home in Mill Road, said: “All the scarecrows have to be recognisable characters from films or stories or tradesmen so that people can easily recognise them and spot them.

“We have 60 scarecrows this year and I think they are all very good. They get better with every year. People put a real effort in.”

He added Saturday’s turnout had been better than last year’s first day but he said that was because people may have seen the forecasts for Sunday and decided to come on Saturday instead.
