Rafters take to the water for annual race in West Norfolk village

The damp weather did nothing to deter rafters from taking to their craft and battling it out for honours at Hilgay at the weekend.

The village's annual raft race has become a firm favourite on the calendar and this year a dozen teams tested their skills - and stamina - to raise money for charity.

Organisers hope to have raised around 2,000 for the Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House, at Snettisham.

Aside from the races, there was also a barbecue, stalls and games which all helped to add to the charity coffers.

Organiser Howard Phillips, of Downham Rotary Club, said he had been delighted that the races had proved so popular, considering the poor weather which had seen-off many events this summer.

'It went really well and everyone had a great time. I had a few sleepless nights beforehand, but it was worth it,' he said.

Mr Phillips, and Hilgay butcher Ali Dent, help put together the annual event which raises money for various charities each year.

Mr Phillips said the Environment Agency had also played a part this year in lowering the water level via Denver Sluice complex so the meadow next to the River Wissey was not flooded or too boggy to be used.

'It worked out fine and everything was able to carry on as planned,' he said.

Plans are already being made for next year's event - although a date has yet to be finalised.
