As Norfolk finally sees summer weather, villagers flock to playing field

The sun finally came out over West Norfolk on Sunday and the crowds joined it for a family fun day at Denver.

The village playing field was packed with crowds of visitors all enjoying a spot of summer weather at the event near Downham Market.

Everything from car-boot to candyfloss was on offer at the third family fun day organised by the playing field association to help raise money for the village and the last two events have made more than £4,000.

The money, along with this year’s takings, will be used to improve the playing field amenities, including plans to improve access for disabled people and the changing rooms.

“I am delighted that the weather has changed for us and want to say thank-you to everyone who has helped with the fun day. It is a lot of work, but is worth the effort,”said association chairman Alan Thulbourne.

Arena events included zumba and gymnastic demonstrations along with a tug-of-war and parade of vintage tractors and cars.

A noon flypast saw some aerobatics by a Pitts biplane while live music added a festival feel to the event.

There was cause for further celebration in the village when it was revealed last week that the association is in line for £33,000 of Olympic legacy funding towards the planned improvements.

The cash comes from a £135m pot from the National Lottery under the Places People Play legacy programme which is designed to ensure the London 2012 Olympic Games benefits grass-root sport.
