The sun came out and so did the crowds as Wymondham carnival made its long-awaited return after more than 20 years.

Thousands thronged Market Cross and Market Street on Saturday to watch as the procession, featuring dozens of local groups, wound its way on foot from Back Lane and through the town’s streets to the market square.

A stage was set up in the Market Cross for performances by zumba and line dancing groups, as well as the 12 finalists from the Wymondham’s Got Talent competition.

The Wymondham Business Group (WBG) organised the event, which was based on a seaside theme with Market Cross acting as the “pier” and the rest of the street hosting 37 stalls from local groups and charities.

There was also traditional seaside fare, including a Punch and Judy stall, burger stands and ice cream vans, as well as donkey rides for the children to enjoy.

David Disney, chairman of the WBG, said: “It has been absolutely brilliant. I am amazed by the number of people that have come- thousands and thousands.

“The pavements were 10 deep with people from the Market Cross down to the library. I have never seen so many people in my life.”

He added the turnout had increased the chances of the event being repeated next year.

“It needed to be brought back. Everybody’s enjoying themselves and the weather has been wonderful. It has brought businesses and the community together and that is exactly what we are about,” Mr Disney said.
