A colourful troop of gorillas is being created in one of the city's shopping malls.

It is hoped about 50 gorilla sculptures will be displayed across Norwich in a Go Go Gorillas! trail next summer, and some of the works of art are currently being painted in Norwich's Castle Mall.

Among them is our Superman-themed gorilla which was designed by our competition winner Sally Adams, from Kirby Bedon, and has just been painted by Norwich-based artist Jenny Leonard who is also painting a jungle-inspired design on a gorilla being sponsored by Think Mobile Media.

She said there had been a lot of interest in the Go Go Gorillas! project from shoppers, with lots of children having their photos taken with our finished Superman-inspired gorilla.

She said: 'A lot of people remember the elephant trail and are looking forward to seeing the gorilla trail.'

Other gorillas being created at Castle Mall include an urban wildlife design by Cat Finlayson, a Freddie Mercury-inspired gorilla by Mik Richardson, and a gorilla covered in cartoon portraits of Norwich people by Daniel Hanton.

Phil Daniels is creating a gorilla which will have a lifelike head and its body will be covered in mirrors.

The Go Go Gorillas! trail aims to raise funds for the young people's charity Break and the Born Free Foundation.

Martin Green, manager of the project for Break, said: 'The artists are doing a great job. All of the gorillas are going to be amazing and it is nice seeing them come to life.'

About 26 organisations have so far sponsored a gorilla. There is still time for other organisations to get involved. Visit www.gogogorillas.co.uk
