Christmas may only just be over, but Norwich supermarkets are already gearing up for Easter, much to the dismay of shoppers.
A snapshot survey of Norwich city centre found that retailers including Tesco, Marks & Spencer, Iceland and Sainsbury’s have all begun to stock up on seasonal Easter treats like mini eggs, hot cross buns and chocolate bunnies, despite it being 100 days away.
In fact, almost half of the food retailers in Norwich we visited already had Easter displays.
The new displays follow a growing trend of retailers starting Christmas preparations earlier every year and John Golby, 70, retired from Harleston has had enough. “It seems like a long time to be selling things for Easter but when they’ve sold out you’ll just have Christmas stuff back on the shelves,” he said.
Nik Wilkinson, 45, unemployed from Barnsley said: “It’s definitely too soon, I wouldn’t buy Easter eggs now”, while many people including Beverly Clarke, 45, a carer from Old Catton, feels it’s simply too soon after the last holiday period. “It’s disgusting, far too early. Christmas is only just over.” she said.
Sandra Hackett, 69, retired from Heartsease doesn’t approve. “You don’t need to go into shops so soon after Christmas and see Easter products on the shelves, it’s stupid,” she said.
The run-up to Easter doesn’t officially start until Lent, which this year will begin March 5.
Ben Shallcross, 33, a bar and restaurant manager from Norwich thinks that’s more than enough notice: “I know the chocolate manufacturing industry starts working as soon as Easter is over, it’s the nature of the industry,” he said, “but having store displays four or six weeks in advance is enough. Everyone knows when Easter is.”
Despite an overwhelmingly negative response to Easter food on sale in January, Joey Kordish, 26, a BT manager from Watton is pleased to see his favourite treats in store. “It can’t be too soon for chocolate,” he said. “I think Crème Eggs are acceptable this early on in the year.”
