Traffic came to a standstill in North Walsham today as cars made way for a VIP visitor who trotted into town to open a new pop-up shop.
Penny the pony marked the launch of saddlery store Ready, Neddy Go, which is the first business to begin trading from part of the former greengrocer’s shop at the top of the Market Place.
And rather than a ribbon cutting ceremony, Penny chomped through a carrot to open the shop in front of a delighted crowd of invited guests, intrigued shoppers and passing motorists.
The pop-up scheme has been spearheaded by North Walsham’s Town team, which has leased the building until February in a bid to boost trade, and give start up businesses a chance to try their hand at running a shop.
The team want local entrepreneurs to rent space in the store at low cost and Ready, Neddy Go - run by Kelly Mardell - is the first business to move in.
Ms Mardell said the pop-up initiative was the perfect platform for her to have a go at running a shop, something she has always wanted to do.
She added: “It’s a good way of testing the water because the rents are low and it really gives you a chance to keep buying stock because your outgoings are far less.”
David Gosling and Rebecca Matthews from the town team attended the opening and were excited to have the first business open.
Ms Matthews, who is also manager of the Griffin partnership, said: “It’s really exciting, not just for the community but also this is exactly what Kelly needs as a young businesswoman who wants to move into the next step of retailing.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity.”
Other space in the shop has been taken up by people wanting to sell jewellery, pottery and refurbished toys who will be taking up residence in the coming weeks.
Anyone interested in trading from the shop should contact Ms Matthews via the Griffin partnership office on 01692 407509 or email email@example.com
■ Ready, Neddy Go will trade until February, opening from 10am - 3pm, Monday - Saturday.
